ตัวนี้เรียกว่าสิ่ว สิ่วมีอยู่หลายอย่าง ส่วนมากภาคเหนือจะนิยมสิ่วกาด(ตลอด)งัว สิ่วป่าอ้อย ประโยชน์ที่ใช้ในการทำบ้านสมัยก่อนมีมาก เพราะว่าต้องได้เจาะ ก็ต้องใช้สิ่วในการทำงาน ก่อนจะใช้งานก็ต้องฝน (ลับ)ให้คม เครื่องมือแต่ละอย่างจะต้องถูกทำให้คมอยู่ตลอด เวลาใช้ก็สะดวก ผลงานที่ออกมาก็เรียบร้อย ไม่แหว่ง เมื่อก่อนคนเชียงใหม่จะใช้สิ่วเมือง มีความคมมาก มาปัจจุบันทันสมัยขึ้น ร้านค้าโรงงานจะทำสิ่วแบบนี้ออกมาซึ่งคนภาคเหนือไม่ค่อยนิยมใช้สักเท่าไหร่ จะใช้สิ่วแบบสมัยก่อนแบบเชียงใหม่เพราะคมกว่า แต่มีข้อเสียคือเจาะไม้ได้ไม่ค่อยลึก แต่สิ่วสมัยใหม่เจาะไม้ได้ลึกกว่าและมีด้ามที่ทนกว่า ประโยชน์ของสิ่วก็ได้ทุกอย่าง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเจาะหูกระต่าย เจาะขื่อ เจาะแป การเจาะหูกระต่ายก็คือจะใช้เจาะเป็นร่อง ขนาดของสิ่วก็ใช้ให้เหมาะกับงานของเรา ตัวเล็ก ตัวใหญ่ เช่นเจาะหูกระต่ายก็ใช้ตัวใหญ่ หากใช้ตัวเล็กก็จะช้า ใช้เวลานาน

          This is a gouge. There are many types. Mostly, Northern Thai people use the kadngua gouge or the paa-oi gouge. The right size gouge must be chosen for each job; small or large. Drilling rabbit ears would use the large gouge. Using the smaller one would take too long.
