          I’m going to show you a technique called ‘tao mai’. This tool is the tao, and it is made of a plane and a wedge. So we will put them together like this. This brass piece is used to prevent the tao from caving in. When you rub wood a lot, there is a chance that it will cave in or warp. If the wood warps, when we use the tao to carve wood, the wood will end up warped in the same way. So we have to put this brass piece here so we can use the tao for a long time.

          ส่วนมากไม้ที่ใช้ทำเต่าจะเป็นไม้เกล็ด ไม้พยุง แล้วแต่ภาค ส่วนมากคนเหนือจะมีไม้ประดู่ ไม้แดง ในการใช้ทำในบางที่ ก่อนจะทำการใช้งานก็ปรับใบไสเล็งให้เข้าล๊อคดูความลึกของไม้ว่าจะใช้ลึกขนาดไหน ก็ปรับใบไสได้

          Usually the tao is used with klet wood or rosewood, depending on the region. Northern Thai people generally use rosewood, or sometimes ironwood. Before you can use it, you have to adjust the plane so that it is locked in the proper place, depending on how deep you want to carve. You can adjust the plane like this.

          ช่างสมัยก่อนจะใช้ปรับผิวไม้ให้เรียบ เพราะเมื่อก่อนไม่มีเต่าไฟฟ้า ก็ใช้เต่าไม้ในการปรับ เต่ามีด้วยกันหลายแบบ อันนี้ชาวสันป่าตองเรียกเต่าหมะตั๊ด จริงๆ ตัวเต่านั้นเหมาะสำหรับปรับบานหน้าต่าง ประตู ถ้าเรานำมาเต่าปรับผิวไม้ค่อนข้างจะช้า ใช้เวลานาน

          Carpenters in the past would use the tao to create an even surface on wood. In the past there was no power planer, so the wooden tao was used for the same effect. There are many types of tao. The Sanpatong people called this one ‘taomatat’. It is good for openings for windows and doors. If we use it to plane a wood surface, it would take a long time.

          แต่าแบบนี้นำไปใช้ได้กับทุกไม้ แต่หากเป็นไม้เนื้อแข็ง คนที่ไม่มีความชำนาญในการใช้เต่าก็จะเต่าไม่ค่อยเข้า แต่หากเป็นไม้สักก็จะสวย เต่าตัวนี้จะเรียบในการปรับพื้นกว่าเต่าไฟฟ้า สมัยปัจจุบันใช้เต่าไฟฟ้า แต่ความละเอียดสู้เต่ามือไม่ได้ เต่ามีหลายแบบ มีเต่าฟอก ทำร่องวงกลบ ประตู หน้าต่าง ถ้าเต่าผิว เต่าเป้จะออกน้อย ความตรงไม้จะดีกว่าเวลานำมามาทาบเกิยกันจะชิดดีกว่า การใช้ก็นำเต่าหยาบเต่าไปก่อนแล้วนำเต่าผิวมาปรับพื้นอีกครั้งให้ละเอียด เศษไม้จากเต่าผิวจะออกไม่มากขี้เลื่อยที่ออกมาจะบาง เวลาใช้ก็จะใช้เต่าผิวในรอบสุดท้ายซึ่งจะทำให้ละเอียดและสวย

          This kind of tao can be used with all kinds of wood. But for hardwood, if the carpenter isn’t an expert, they might not be able to make it work. But for teak wood, this works beautifully. This is going to do smoother work than a power planer. Today, carpenters use power planers, but the product isn’t nearly as detailed as a wooden tao. There are many types of tao. A taofog is used to make cavities for windows and doors. For planing wood surfaces, a taopae will only take of a little at a time. Starting with a coarser tao and then using a more detailed tao will work well. There are not a lot of shavings that come from the detail work tao. They will be very thin. These tao will be used for planing the surface of the wood at the very end to make it beautiful.

          Electric planers will do this work faster, but you will still need a wooden tao at the end for the details. I’ll demonstrate using an electric planer. But today there are even more modern tools, like the iron.
